Adams Calendar South Africa

July 8, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

Adams Calendar or Enkis Calendar South Africa

The oldest man made structure 0n earth is in South Africa and is Known as Adams Calendar and more recently as Enkis Calendar.Adams Calendar South Africa

The age of Adams Calendar.

The age of this site could be as old as the dawn of Homo Sapiens about 250, 000 years. It is however estimated to be around 75,000 years old.  This was dated by rock art in the area at the time and the movement of the people during this period.

What was Adams Calendar used for?

The calendar was used by ancient human beings as a calendar as the name suggests. They were able to use the movement of the sun and shadow to plot time and a basic calendar.

How Does it work?

Enkis Calendar South Africa

Ancient humans carved an upright stone to have a sharp edge which cast a shadow of the sun onto the flat “Calendar Rock”. The larger “monolith” rock was where these people marked off the days of the week and weeks. The sun stretched perfectly from one side of the flat rock to the other and moved left to right and back again.

Who found Adams Calendar?

Johan Heine – A pilot and fire fighting head for the forests of Mpumalanga South Africans love so much. He spotted this location while searching for a missing colleague. Spotting an unusual arrangement of rocks from the air. Persisted work by Johan eventually caused academics to pay attention.

Other top pages well worth a visit.

History of Silver

July 7, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

The History of Silver

Silver: is a lustrous white, ductile, malleable metal, found both uncombined and inside ores such as argentite, having the best thermal & electrical conductivity of all metals. It is highly prized for jewelry, table ware as well as other ornamental use & is often used in coinage, photography, dentistry, soldering alloys, electrical contacts, as well as printed circuit boards.

The History of Silver – The Beginning of Silver 4000 BC – 1500 ADHistory of Silver

Turkey was the first country or area to produce Silver in good quantity. Turkey or Anatolia as it was known supplied craftspeople around Asia as well as Crete and Greece in the Minoan / Mycenaean cultures.

The first real effort to mine came in 3000 BC and the first advancement came in 2500 BC with the “cupellation” process to extract it from Silver, Lead ore.

Armenia then became a prominent area for Silver supply.

With the decline of Minoan and Mycenaean cultures Silver production changed and centered around Laurium (who produced around 1 million Troy ounces per year – 600 – 300 BC) for the Greek civilization. This allowed the building of Athens into a powerful state with an advanced navy.

Silver trade along Asia and north Africa also began to expand after the 8th century BC.

The Carthaginians then exploited Spanish Silver and then After the Punic wars Romans replaced them. However for 1000 years to follow Spanish Silver remained critically important only halted by Moorish invasion of Spain.  Greece Asia Minor and Italy then stepped up to the plate to replace this loss.

Silver CoinsDiscoveries of Silver were then made in Germany and Austria Hungary.

True expansion of production only came between 1000 – 1500 AD with locations and technology improvements.

The History of Silver – The new World Silver 1500 – 1875

The finding of the “new World” in 1492 led to the boom in silver production. The mercury amalgamation process boosted this advance.

The first region to be exploited for silver in the new world was Bolivia from 1500 – 1800 (about 1 billion troy ounces). Gradually Mexico also came to the fore in the latter years. Peru was also a consistent producer during this time.

From 1500 – 1800 together Bolivia, mexico and Peru made up 85% of the worlds silver production with Germany, Hungary and Russia making up most of the rest.

After 1850 a few other countries then came to the fore with the United States leading the way with a large Lode in Nevada.

The History of Silver – The Rise of North American Silver. 1876 – 1920

The last quarter of 19th century saw Silver production quadruple led by innovative technology and exploration of new regions.Silver Mining

Nevada, Colorado and Utah became big producers Followed soon after by Australia, Central America and Europe.

1900 – 1920 saw another 50% growth in Silver production led by discoveries in Canada, United States, Africa, Mexico, Chile, Japan and others.

Technology allowing steam assisted drilling, mining, mine draining and better mine logistics was a huge step up for the world.

The Fuming Process also allowed better extraction from low grade ores.

The history of Silver – Modern Silver 1921 – present day.

Unfortunately a lot of the worlds sources were depleted by 1900.

But luckily further technological advancements replaced this including “Bulk Mining” above and below ground, refine extraction methods able to separate base metals from ore and better ore separation by froth flotation.

Silver Metal DetectingAnother good advancement was electro-refining methods for silver and refinery slime separation.

With these techniques production and supply boom.

Today Silver is still sought after by treasure hunters looking for Spanish pieces of eight mined from the new world and lost to Shipwrecks on the ocean bottoms. Today the hunt even continues in parks and on the beaches where metal detector enthusiast add to their old coin collections by pulling up coins that have been hidden for many years.

If you want to join this Silver rush you best start with a quality metal detector to get you on your way to riches.

The History of Gold & the Gold Rush

July 5, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

The History of Gold & the Gold Rush

What is Gold: A precious metal with a yellowish colour, a chemical element with an atomic number of 79, highly valued for use in jewelry and decorations, as well as a  guarantee for the value of currencies.Gold Rush

How Does Gold Form: Generally gold forms in volcano vents deep underground. Mineral traveling in super hot gas that travels up the pipes in the earth condense on the pipe walls and stay there until such volcanoes are eroded over a very long period of time or miners go down to dig it out.

Lode Deposits: deep gold found in gold bearing ore. Such ore contains microscopic particles of gold requiring chemical processes to extract.

Alluvial or Placer deposits: Found in free flakes, grains or even larger nuggets that have been eroded from rocks. This is much richer pure gold that is often carried by water in streams and rivers and deposited.  It is this gold that metal detectorists can find with a metal detector like the Garrett Gold Stinger.

The History of Gold.

One of the first civilizations to hold gold dear were the Incas who referred to it as the “tears of the sun“. Even egyption hyroglyphs from 2600 BC explained that gold was found more than dirt in Egypt. Gold has been used as money for over 5000 Years.

The Beginning.

Gold Which was found originally as shining yellow nuggets was first used in 4600 BC as jewelery because of its beauty. It first appeared in the Balkans in the 4th millennium BC and then in Europe from the 2nd Millennium BC.

The first area to produce good quantities of gold was Nubia in ancient Egypt and also across the red sea in Saudi Arabia.

Even the bible describes gold in the old testament. An example of this is New Jerusalem being described as having streets of gold clear as crystal.

Coinage.

Near the South Eastern corner of the Black Sea was an area famouse for producing gold. This area is said to be responsible for for assisting in the first coinage in Lydia around 610 BC. From the 6th to the 5th century BC China also produced gold square coins. In 1257 the first gold coins or pennies were issued in England by Henry III.

Rome.

The Romans then developed better methods of extracting gold through hydraulic mining from around 25 BC on in Hispania and 106 AD onwards in Dacia. The Romans even developed aquaducts to sluice large alluvial deposits. They continued to find and exploit gold across their empire.

Africa.

In 1200 peoples living at Mapungubwe had mastered gold working techniques including gold plating. Also in Africa the Empire of Mali became famous across the world for gold production between 1312 – 1337. Mansa Musa rwho ruled the empire went on a great hajj to Mecca and when he passed through Cairo it was said a 100 camel train and thousands of people who gave away so much gold that the price of gold in Egypt was depreciated for more than a decade.

Colonization.

The Incas and Aztecs both considered gold sacred with the latter calling it the “God Excrement”.

In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered the new world. When Europeans learned of the large amounts of gold and silver worn by native people in the Americas fuel was poured on the colonization fire.  By 1510 the Spanish conquest of Inca gold causes gold to flood to Europe.

Gold Rushes.

The gold rushes all occurred in the 19th century wherever large deposits were found.

Californian Gold Rush – 1848–1855

Gold was found at Sutters mill in California and people started to pour in from all directions, especially over the California trail and the Gila River Trail. Such gold seekers were known as “Forty-Niners”. Tens of Billions of Dollars worth of gold was recovered which led to great wealth for a few individuals.

Australian Gold Rush – 1851

Gold was discovered in Australia by Edward Hammond Hargraves in New South Whales. 8 Months later gold was found in Victoria. Australias population boomed from 400 000 to 1 000 000 people from 1845 – 1896.

Colorado Gold Rush – 1858

Earlier known as the Pikes Peak Gold Rush the “Fifty-Niners” came flooding to western Kansas & South Western Nebraska after gold was discovered at the South Platte River Valley.

Otago Gold Rush – 1860’s

The discovery of gold in Otago New Zealand led to a gold rush. Many of these gold hunters came from California and Australia.

Black Hills Gold Rush – 1874

In Dakota United States locals began to see native Americans carrying gold that was rumored to come from the black hills. Prospectors then found gold near Custer South Dakota and again gold was found at Deadwood Gulch.  A party entering the territory got all the gold they could carry but were killed by native Americans when they tried to leave.

South African Gold Rush – 1886

The Witwatersrand Gold Rush led to the establishment of Johannesburg. For many years before gold seeker had luck at the alluvial fields of Pilgrims Rest and Barberton. But only in 1886 was the huge deposit of gold in the Witwatersrand discovered. This deposit was once a massive inland lake.

Canadian Gold Rush – 1896

Also known as the Klondike or Yukon Gold Rush the rush centered around the Klondike River near Dawson City in Yukon Canada and was first found in Rabbit Creek.  Over 390 000 Kilograms of gold have come from this area since its discovery.

Modern Times.

Gold Metal Detectors

75% of all gold ever produced has been extracted since 1910.  Today gold still holds that same allure and attraction that it did not so long ago. Gold is still seen as the safest investment around leading to a very high gold price of over $1500 per troy oz.
People still hope to strike it rich all over the world looking for gold. Just turn on the TV and Watch Gold Rush Alaska on Discovery to see the lengths people will go to to get there hands on the tears of the sun.
Metal Detectors are also sold hand over fist to modern gold prospectors who have good success finding gold nuggets in old gold fields and the like.
