Minelab GPX 5000 Metal Detector South Africa
The Minelab GPX 5000 metal detector is probably the most advanced gold detector in the world.
We also have stock of the older generation GPX4500 available for the African market.

One of the big problems with the Minelab products seems to be the use of Jargon and complex language that the average person doesn’t want to or need to think about when making an already complex buying decision. We hope this page clears up some confusion and gives you a great idea of what the GPX 5000 metal detector can do for you. We also have a Minelab expert on hand ready to answer any questions you have on the Minelab Products.
What is it made for?
First of all it must be said that this is specifically designed for gold nugget hunting especially in highly mineralised soil. It also happens to be the most expensive metal detector on the market but for a good reason.
Can a hobbies use this machine? Is it only for serious gold prospectors?
Although not often selected due to the price it is also used by very serious relic and jewellery hunters who want to recover deep targets. It is great for Beach hunting due to the Salt/gold timing and also relic hunting in very bad conditions. But its primary purpose is locating the smallest or biggest raw gold nuggets in tough conditions.
What makes it special?
Depth: It is certainly the detector that can go deeper than any other. Some say it can reach 1,5 meters down on good sized targets which is unheard of with other brands. This is called the GPX Depth advantage.
Mineralisation: It is probably the best machine on the market when dealing with ground mineralisation. Ground mineralisation in metallic elements occurring naturally in the soil especially where gold is to be found. This can interfere with many detectors making it incredibly difficult to hunt for nuggets in such ground conditions. The GPX 5000 metal detector can see through this mineralisation and is unaffected by it to great depths.
Features / Jargon.
The GPX 500 gold detector has some exclusive technology built in. These include Multi Period Sensing (MPS), Dual Voltage Technology (DVT), Smart Electronic Timing Alignment (SETA) and more. These all work to make even the smallest nugget easy to identify.
New Soil Timings.
Soil timings are settings that you can select for different soil conditions, depths and sizes. These modify the above features to be set to what you are looking for and the conditions of the soil mineralisation. They are like gears in your car. They gear the detector to the conditions you find yourself in. 8 different timings are available including Normal, Sensitive Extra, Enhance, Sharp, Sensitive Smooth, Coin/Relic, Salt/Gold & Fine Gold.
Other Features.
Six preset Search Modes. Super easy to switch between, modify and rename yourself. Choose between General, Deep search, Hi-Mineral, Patch, Hi-Trash and Pinpoint functions.
Increased Rx Gain adjustment. A fancy way of saying you can adjust sensitivity of the unit.
Automatic Ground balance. A fancy way of saying that the GPX will automatically adjust to limit ground mineralisation and its effects on the detector.
Audio adjustments. Almost all audio on the machine is customisable including Threshold, Tone, Audio Type, Signal Peak, Response, Target Volume, Volume limit, Stabilizer.
Iron Reject enables you to set the detector to ignore iron targets.
Motion control. The detector adjustable to match your sweep speed and optimise target responses.
Tune or Noise Cancel. Offers the ability to remove electrical interference.
Backlight. Read your LCD screen in any light conditions.
Lightweight Li-ion Battery. Long lasting 12 hour Battery life and an audio boost function.
Two coils. The “discs” or coils at the bottom of the detector. With the GPX you get 2 as standard – 11” Double-D coil as well as 11” Monoloop coil.
Frequency / Transmission. This detector uses Pulse Induction not the alternative beat frequency Oscillator. PI sends a high voltage pulse into the ground, where metal is absent the spike in voltage decreases at uniform rate. If metal is present it would conduct some voltage within itself and the time taken for the pulse to decrease to zero would decrease which indicates the presence of metal. PI is impervious to ground mineralization.
Length. 1100mm X 1300mm.
Weight. 2.4kg including coil – Battery weight 780g
Warranty. 3 years for the control box & coil.
The Minelab GPX 5000 gold detector is available in South Africa and has been used to great effect in the gold fields of Zimbabwe and the like.
