Hi guys
i’m new to metal detecting, already enjoying it..found some 1 and r2 coins and the metal cents stuff as well.
This morning i searched a well known fishing spot next to the Knysna estuary, low and behold i found a tiki 1940 3d, and a 1/4 d or P not sure, they have seen better days in the salty mud, the 1/4 d is 1943, i can make out the emblems on them though, along with them 3m apart there was 1c and 2c dating from the 60’s and 70’s..
….i bought a garret ace150 and it’s load of fun!

One of the R2 rands i dug out there yesterday is dated 2004 (10 years of independence) with a flag on it…
i thought it must be 2005 …lol so iread the date again…
Hell, boys….. the R5 coin with the inserted nickel piece, it decay’s on the outer brim to nothin, our new coins are really a mess aren’ they..

Hi,
Top finds! Finally a nice website showcasing South African metal detecting finds.
Thanks.
Stephan
I went out hunting yesterday down in East London, found about R60.00 on the beach and lots of older coins, we did not find anything much else of interest, but had a laugh, there was this other guy Gary along as well, Now Gary thinks that he is the Maneer when it comes to using his Excalibur 2 anyway Ben sorted out all the cents and damaged salt coins and had about a full handful of these coins, when Gary was not looking, Ben threw them out near Gary in the water, anyway we were on our way out and just watched Gary for a few minutes, well actually over half an hour, Gary was digging lots of small holes in circles.
Yeah we had a smile…………
Fantastic!
It’s always a cool feeling to finally unearth the object that caused the BLEEEP!
Re. the cartridge cases found, the first on the left .303 british , if it has R^L C 11 stamped on the base or just C 11 it will fall into the Boer War era. The second case could possibly be Boer War Mauser stamped DWM 1896-1899 K or FyA, however it looks more like a 7.62 SADF case stamped R1A1 7.62. Check it out.
The metal ‘shotgun shell’ is almost certainly an old .577/450 Martini Henry cartridge case, it looks like it is made of rolled brass which would date it to around the early 1880’s.
These cartridges are common finds in South Africa as these calibres were used during the 2nd Boer War (exepting the 7.62 NATO) during the conflict as well as being used for hunting.
I have found about 7 or 8 Boer War era .303 cases at my folks old house in Benoni ! most of them under the floorboards! How the hell did they get there, were they fired in anger,or the remnants of a target shoot?
Keep it BLEEP’IN.
These are AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s amazing to think what is out there buried under the ground, waiting to be found …
