Largest Gold Nugget Ever Found

The Largest Gold Nugget Ever Found – Welcome Stranger!

Welcome Gold Nugget
Welcome nugget

The largest gold nugget to be pulled out of the soil is known as the Welcome Stanger Nugget. It was discovered by John Deason and Richard Oates back in 1869 in Victoria Australia.

These lucky fellows found the largest gold nugget ever and it weighed in at a refined weight of 2.283 oz. It was also 61 cm by 31 cm. Massive chunk of gold! Take a look at a replica of this stunning piece of gold below.

This is way more than a retirement nugget or the one ounce club!

Can you believe that the two miners were paid only 9,381 pounds sterling for the find. I cant imagine how much it would be worth today! (Maybe I don’t want to)

Such an important find like this deserves to be commemorated and a statue has been erected at the location where the biggest Gold Nugget ever found was located. You could go and see it for yourself in Victoria.

Other large gold nuggets have been found including the “Welcome Nugget” also found in Australia. Although all these big gold nuggets were all found way back in the past this does not mean that no more exist!

Largest Gold Nugget Ever Found
Welcome Stranger

No man can cover all the earth in search of gold. My bet is that even larger ones lie undisturbed across the globe waiting for you to stumble across. All you may need is a Gold Detector, some hard work and a bit of luck.

The Largest gold piece ever found with a metal detector is known as the “Hand of Faith” and is pictured below. Found by Kevin Hillier yet again in Australia in 1980. This baby weighed in at 27.21 kg’s!

The Latest Find was made in Ballarat Australia on January 16th 2013 by an Australian using a Minelab GPX5000. Worth around $500 000 it weighed in at 5.4 kilograms.

The History of Gold & the Gold Rush

July 5, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

The History of Gold & the Gold Rush

What is Gold: A precious metal with a yellowish colour, a chemical element with an atomic number of 79, highly valued for use in jewelry and decorations, as well as a  guarantee for the value of currencies.Gold Rush

How Does Gold Form: Generally gold forms in volcano vents deep underground. Mineral traveling in super hot gas that travels up the pipes in the earth condense on the pipe walls and stay there until such volcanoes are eroded over a very long period of time or miners go down to dig it out.

Lode Deposits: deep gold found in gold bearing ore. Such ore contains microscopic particles of gold requiring chemical processes to extract.

Alluvial or Placer deposits: Found in free flakes, grains or even larger nuggets that have been eroded from rocks. This is much richer pure gold that is often carried by water in streams and rivers and deposited.  It is this gold that metal detectorists can find with a metal detector like the Garrett Gold Stinger.

The History of Gold.

One of the first civilizations to hold gold dear were the Incas who referred to it as the “tears of the sun“. Even egyption hyroglyphs from 2600 BC explained that gold was found more than dirt in Egypt. Gold has been used as money for over 5000 Years.

The Beginning.

Gold Which was found originally as shining yellow nuggets was first used in 4600 BC as jewelery because of its beauty. It first appeared in the Balkans in the 4th millennium BC and then in Europe from the 2nd Millennium BC.

The first area to produce good quantities of gold was Nubia in ancient Egypt and also across the red sea in Saudi Arabia.

Even the bible describes gold in the old testament. An example of this is New Jerusalem being described as having streets of gold clear as crystal.

Coinage.

Near the South Eastern corner of the Black Sea was an area famouse for producing gold. This area is said to be responsible for for assisting in the first coinage in Lydia around 610 BC. From the 6th to the 5th century BC China also produced gold square coins. In 1257 the first gold coins or pennies were issued in England by Henry III.

Rome.

The Romans then developed better methods of extracting gold through hydraulic mining from around 25 BC on in Hispania and 106 AD onwards in Dacia. The Romans even developed aquaducts to sluice large alluvial deposits. They continued to find and exploit gold across their empire.

Africa.

In 1200 peoples living at Mapungubwe had mastered gold working techniques including gold plating. Also in Africa the Empire of Mali became famous across the world for gold production between 1312 – 1337. Mansa Musa rwho ruled the empire went on a great hajj to Mecca and when he passed through Cairo it was said a 100 camel train and thousands of people who gave away so much gold that the price of gold in Egypt was depreciated for more than a decade.

Colonization.

The Incas and Aztecs both considered gold sacred with the latter calling it the “God Excrement”.

In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered the new world. When Europeans learned of the large amounts of gold and silver worn by native people in the Americas fuel was poured on the colonization fire.  By 1510 the Spanish conquest of Inca gold causes gold to flood to Europe.

Gold Rushes.

The gold rushes all occurred in the 19th century wherever large deposits were found.

Californian Gold Rush – 1848–1855

Gold was found at Sutters mill in California and people started to pour in from all directions, especially over the California trail and the Gila River Trail. Such gold seekers were known as “Forty-Niners”. Tens of Billions of Dollars worth of gold was recovered which led to great wealth for a few individuals.

Australian Gold Rush – 1851

Gold was discovered in Australia by Edward Hammond Hargraves in New South Whales. 8 Months later gold was found in Victoria. Australias population boomed from 400 000 to 1 000 000 people from 1845 – 1896.

Colorado Gold Rush – 1858

Earlier known as the Pikes Peak Gold Rush the “Fifty-Niners” came flooding to western Kansas & South Western Nebraska after gold was discovered at the South Platte River Valley.

Otago Gold Rush – 1860’s

The discovery of gold in Otago New Zealand led to a gold rush. Many of these gold hunters came from California and Australia.

Black Hills Gold Rush – 1874

In Dakota United States locals began to see native Americans carrying gold that was rumored to come from the black hills. Prospectors then found gold near Custer South Dakota and again gold was found at Deadwood Gulch.  A party entering the territory got all the gold they could carry but were killed by native Americans when they tried to leave.

South African Gold Rush – 1886

The Witwatersrand Gold Rush led to the establishment of Johannesburg. For many years before gold seeker had luck at the alluvial fields of Pilgrims Rest and Barberton. But only in 1886 was the huge deposit of gold in the Witwatersrand discovered. This deposit was once a massive inland lake.

Canadian Gold Rush – 1896

Also known as the Klondike or Yukon Gold Rush the rush centered around the Klondike River near Dawson City in Yukon Canada and was first found in Rabbit Creek.  Over 390 000 Kilograms of gold have come from this area since its discovery.

Modern Times.

Gold Metal Detectors

75% of all gold ever produced has been extracted since 1910.  Today gold still holds that same allure and attraction that it did not so long ago. Gold is still seen as the safest investment around leading to a very high gold price of over $1500 per troy oz.
People still hope to strike it rich all over the world looking for gold. Just turn on the TV and Watch Gold Rush Alaska on Discovery to see the lengths people will go to to get there hands on the tears of the sun.
Metal Detectors are also sold hand over fist to modern gold prospectors who have good success finding gold nuggets in old gold fields and the like.

The Kruger Millions South Africa

May 16, 2011 by Rich 8 Comments

The Kruger Millions

Could you be the one to change history and locate the famous Kruger Millions?

Let’s start at the beginning.

What are the Kruger Millions?
The Kruger Millions, refers to riches supposedly concealed by, or on behalf of, South African President Paul Kruger.
President Paul Kruger

When was the treasure hidden?
Near the end of the Anglo Boar War – 1899 – 1902.

How much is hidden?
Accounts and theories vary as to the true value of the treasure but many believe it is the biggest undiscovered hoard of treasure in the world today. Both verbal and written reports indicate the following: Total Gold production between 1884 & 1900 was beyond R170 million (at the time the gold price was R8.50 per Troy Ounce). A very large portion of this belonged to the government and before the evacuation on the Witwatersrand in 1900 (9 days before the war began) the Transvaal government detained all the gold before it could be sent to Europe. All the native gold in the banks was also seized. Gold export was then banned. This was estimated at R1 000 000.00

Between Sept 1899 and May 1900 947 000 golden pounds were manufactured at the SA Mint to the value of R1 894 000.00. R94 342.00 in silver coins were also minted.

In todays money this would equal in excess of a staggering $ 243 000 000.00!!!!!

What happened to the stash?

The Kruger Millions
Map Drawn by H E Winder. Located in Chapter 10 of his book – The Mystery of the Kruger Millions.

According to records, on 4 June 1900 the state attorney of the government took delivery of a substantial sum of gold pounds, gold bars, mint gold and fine gold which left Pretoria by train.

President Kruger had left Pretoria by train a few days earlier on 2nd May,1900 and had travelled to Middelburg, for about 2 weeks. It is recorded that the State Attorney Field Marshal Jan Smuts (A later SA president) along with the Auditor general and a few other high ranking officials delivered all the gold and coins that was seized to president Kruger at Middelburg.

After this stop the government train travelled on to Machadodorp then Waterval Boven and finally stopped at Hectorspruit.

A witness to this journey a Mr J Kloppers (a government employee) stated that the Government carriage was indeed seen by him in 3 of the stations above. He was paid in 25% minted gold coins and 75% paper money.

The President then moved on to Steenkampsberg seen again by Mr J Kloppers. He stated that he did not see any more gold pounds or un-minted coins at this location.

Some well known and respected historians state that a large portion of this gold went on to Portuguese territory (Mozambique) and then was shipped to Europe but a large portion disappeared.

It is reported that the Government also took the Silver coins that were minted at the time but no silver coins bearing the 1898 date have ever been seen.

President Paul Kruger then sailed to Holland on the Gelderland on the 19th of October, 1900, while “the British poured in from all sides”.

Why has the Kruger Millions Legend persisted?

A big contributor was Brittish Priminister Neville Chamberlain aho at the House of Commons met old ZAR generals on 5 November 1902. They were trying to strike a deal in which Chamberlain would share the Kruger Millions with them if they could help him locate it.

A statement made by a Mr John Holtzhausen on the 29th of September 1905 has also lead to the growing of this fabulous story. He was in prison in Kimberley, for stealing a horse and carriage. He was adamant that he & 2 others – Pretorius, a veld cornet, as well as a Mr Swartz, were told by the Transvaal government to bury gold & coins. He said that when he was arrested for stealing the horse and carriage, he was on route to dig up the Kruger Millions treasure which was hidden 50 miles to the north of the Blyde River and also north of Leydsdorp. Apparently Pretorius had died in the war & Swartz had been hanged for killing a man named van Niekerk. Holtzhausen was as a result the only person left alive who knew the whereabouts of the treasure.

It is believed that he hid the stash to protect it from the English in his rush to leave. Historians say that he would naturally have commandeered all valuable assets and hid them in a place or places of safety.

On his death President Paul Kruger wrote to the Boer people: “Look in the past for all that is good and beautiful, take that for your ideal and build on it your future”.

The Kruger Millions in Modern Times.

To this day people from all over the world still search for the Kruger Millions on farms and places of hiding along President Paul Krugers train route in modern day Mpumalanga South Africa. Take a look at some great finds being made here.

Perhaps you could be the one to find the cave, dig the farm and strike it lucky on your quest for wealth beyond your wildest dreams.

Until then the story of Kruger Millions will remain a mystery……Or will it? Kruger Millions Discovered?
