Military history fair Voortrekker monument 2012

November 29, 2012 by Rich Leave a Comment

Military history fair.Voortrekker Monument

What a top outing  the military history fair in Pretoria turned out to be! Myself and Tonie braved the threat of tolls to trek across the Jukskei to the Voortrekker monument in Pretoria for this years South African Military History Fair. This years event took place in May and it did not disappoint!

old metal detectorThere were stalls of all types selling and dealing everything from boere-wors rolls and military history books to Boer War memorabilia and much more. Badges, buttons, guns, knives, medals, silver, tanks, coins and even the oldest metal detector I have ever seen was available for sale. The old detector pictured right was probably world war 2 era. A great display piece for lukas’ Boer War Relics Museum!
People tuned out in good numbers and brought along the youngsters who had a ball climbing on tanks and running riot. There were even those who came in full military uniform and brought with their MG 42’s (which we hoped were not loaded). Truly a military history buffs dream.
I picked up a nice Boer War arms and ammunition book, and Tonie got himself some great silver items. We both chowed down on a vast quantity of pancakes before visiting the monument while we were their.Military History Fair
All in all it was a top day out and we can fully recommend that all enthusiasts come out in force next year! We will post details of the next event on Twitter, Facebook and Google + so nobody can say they did not know about it!
At only R20 it is really worth the entrance fee and a drive to the monument!
See you there next year!
In the mean time be sure to visit the war museum at the Johannesburg Zoo (opposite Zoo lake) It also has some top items on display and a nice shop to spend your hard earned Madibas.

Beach hunting with the GTI 2500 customer review

August 8, 2012 by Rich Leave a Comment

The GTI 2500 at the beach.

GTI 2500 at the beach

I recently took my GTI 2500 metal detector to the beach on the north coast of Durban to give it a go while on holiday and this is what i found.

Heavy beast!

On start off I had to watch my luggage at the GTI 2500 is very heady and with 3 coils in the mix it took up half my 20KG weight allowance. Speaking of the weight if is very difficult to walk long stretches on the beach with this giant hulk. Your arm will fall off even if you are fit. I have a mixed review for its performance.

Search Coil fail.

GTI 10x14 searchcoil

I tried out my new double d non imaging coil I got for it as it was recommended for mineralisation, better target separation and good at the beach. I found this coil which set me back a grand or so to be a complete dud. It had the same separation as my large ring coil and performed no better on the beach than the concentric coil. Coupled with the fact that the double d cant be used with imaging for target size make it a massive disappointment for me.

I then switched to my large concentric coil on the dry sand which performed very well although I must say when I took my little Ace 250 to Singapore and Australia it performed just as well. So no real benefit over the good old ace 250 on the dry sand although having the target size did help eliminate unnecessary digging for cans and large trash. This was pretty much the only plus for the GTI 2500 on the trip.

In the wet sand.

Garrett promote the GTI as being “recommended” for surf hunting (wet sand) but just like the ace it went berserk in the wet and was not useful. I tried both deep seeking pulse induction and normal mode. I would not recommend it for wet surf. Although I never tried turning the sensitivity way down.

Large Concentric imaging searchcoilI found about 30 or so modern coins, plenty of sinkers and a nice 1930’s ticky in the Tidal Pool at salt rock. Tidal pools seem like a good bet if you have a machine that can handle the wet. Storms and shifting sands will not wash away treasures in tidal pools.

I may be a bit biased due to the fact that the North Coast of KZN beach are very steep and shifting sands cover treasures in tons of earth. For a fair assessment id have to try it on some more promising beaches.

but overall I was not happy and would have been just as successful with the Ace 250 on my trip to Durban.

A pic of the finds from the 3 days hunting. Not a ring to be seen:

Adams Calendar South Africa

July 8, 2011 by Rich Leave a Comment

Adams Calendar or Enkis Calendar South Africa

The oldest man made structure 0n earth is in South Africa and is Known as Adams Calendar and more recently as Enkis Calendar.Adams Calendar South Africa

The age of Adams Calendar.

The age of this site could be as old as the dawn of Homo Sapiens about 250, 000 years. It is however estimated to be around 75,000 years old.  This was dated by rock art in the area at the time and the movement of the people during this period.

What was Adams Calendar used for?

The calendar was used by ancient human beings as a calendar as the name suggests. They were able to use the movement of the sun and shadow to plot time and a basic calendar.

How Does it work?

Enkis Calendar South Africa

Ancient humans carved an upright stone to have a sharp edge which cast a shadow of the sun onto the flat “Calendar Rock”. The larger “monolith” rock was where these people marked off the days of the week and weeks. The sun stretched perfectly from one side of the flat rock to the other and moved left to right and back again.

Who found Adams Calendar?

Johan Heine – A pilot and fire fighting head for the forests of Mpumalanga South Africans love so much. He spotted this location while searching for a missing colleague. Spotting an unusual arrangement of rocks from the air. Persisted work by Johan eventually caused academics to pay attention.

Other top pages well worth a visit.
