Cruising with a Metal Detector

October 13, 2016 by Rich Leave a Comment

Taking Your Metal Detector On A Cruise Ship.

So you think it is a good idea to go on a cruise and take your metal detector along? Sounds like a great idea, you can detect many beaches in many different locations and trot back to home base. The ability to sample such a wide variety of beaches or locations in one holiday is very tempting indeed. There are many cruise companies out there offering great deals for Holiday going to countries you just couldn’t reach all one go without being on a cruise. This website is one such example.

Some things to think about if you are considering going on a cruise.

  • Contact the cruise line first. – Ask them if you can take your toy hobby metal detector. If you can even get written permission if you have problems getting on board.
  • Do not announce to security on boarding that you have a metal detector and is it ok. The default answer will almost always be no.
  • Do it the same as an airline. Pack it in your main luggage.
  • If questioned ask why your toy is a problem and say you have permission from head office.
  • They may in extreme cases confiscate it for the duration of the cruise and give it back when cruise is over. In an even worse scenario they may ask you to leave it behind and you will have to hope you have enough time to go and store it somewhere and still make boarding. – Some stories are around out there like this for certain cruise lines.
  • If you take a pin pointer – particularly the original Garrett pro pointer – consider not taking it or spraying it a different colour so it looks less like a weapon. The New Garrett Carrot should be fine in bright orange. The more your kit looks like hobby toys the better.
  • Got more tips for us? Send them in!

Metal Detecting in Mauritius

December 27, 2013 by Rich Leave a Comment

Metal Detecting in Mauritius.

What a place to go metal detecting! Mauritius has some of the cleanest most beautiful beaches in the world.

Mauritius

Metal detecting here is an absolute pleasure as the scenery is incredible and the bounty plentiful. If you own a metal detector in Mauritius then you will be in for a treat as competition is low and finds abound.

Two Metal Detector SA Club members were lucky enough to do some holiday detecting in Mauritius in 2013 with some great finds. Both were made in the South West of Mauritius around Flic n Flac.

The main public beaches will have a lot more trash, however the resort beaches are clean on the surface but you will still get the dreaded buried cans from people too lazy to reach a dustbin. For the most part however you are lightly to find plenty of jewelry and Mauritian Rupees. You will even pick up a South African Rand or 2.

Here are a few photos of Tobies Mauritian Metal Detecting Finds. A great haul of Mauritian coins, toys and jewelry.

Some finds made by Richard at Sugar Beach Resort Mauritius: A good few coins, a nice ring and some odds and ends as well as the inevitable R2 coin. About 3 hours worth of detecting the beach at night.

There are also plenty of shipwrecks around Mauritius from the old Dutch East India ships and others. You never know what treasure will wash up on a Mauritius beach.

Next time you are on holiday be sure to take your detector along for the ride, it may just pay for your holiday and help you catch a top class tan while hitting the beach.

Update Silver Rush

April 10, 2013 by Rich Leave a Comment

Update Silver Rush

Update: The new season of Treasure quest is called Silver Rush.

Silver Rush airs around 24 Feb in the united states on Discovery Channel. It is not a full season but rather one or 2 documentaries on the recovery of the Silver from the wreck found by Oddysey north of Ireland.

Oddysey posted this on their Facebook page a while back – A nice hint in a recent video from Oddysey indicated 3 new TV specials would air on Discovery in the first Quarter of 2013! Seems like this has come true.

However we still would love to have a full season for treasure quest. but a few documentaries is better than nothing.

Hope everyone enjoys the new show.

Metal Detecting Nations

December 14, 2012 by Rich Leave a Comment

Which countries search for metal detectors online?

Thanks to Google Trends we are able to see which countries are interested in our metal detecting hobby by looking at the volume of searches for metal detectors. These metal detecting statistics are for 2004 – 2012.

Map of “Detector Nations”

The map clearly shows those countries who traditionally are interested in the hobby. Still appears to be a western world pursuit, but its good to see South Africa high up on the list.

Trend Line of metal detector searches.

The trend line shows a steady decrease in interest from 2004 to present. The spikes are December months – Xmas gifts 🙂 “Metal Detectors” are searched for 550,000 times a month globally.

Who’s looking for Garrett Detectors?

As expected Garrett is Made in USA and enjoys a good deal of dominance in the USA, Canada and the UK. “Garrett Metal Detectors” are searched for 27,100 times a month globally and 210 times a month in South Africa.

Who’s looking for Minelab Detectors?

Again as expected it is predominantly Australia. Minelab is made and has its best market in Australia. “Minelab Metal Detectors” are searched for 6,600 times a month globally and 36 times a month in South Africa.

Boer War History

Another interesting trend I looked at for the period was interest in Boer War History. Sadly interest is declining steadily since 2004. “Boer War” gets 110,000 searches globally per month and 8100 in South Africa per month.

Trends of Boer War searches.

Interest as expected is confined to English Speaking British colonies.
I do hope you enjoyed this trip into the world of Metal Detecting trends and stats. Hopefully the hobby will grow from strength to strength.

Military history fair Voortrekker monument 2012

November 29, 2012 by Rich Leave a Comment

Military history fair.Voortrekker Monument

What a top outing  the military history fair in Pretoria turned out to be! Myself and Tonie braved the threat of tolls to trek across the Jukskei to the Voortrekker monument in Pretoria for this years South African Military History Fair. This years event took place in May and it did not disappoint!

old metal detectorThere were stalls of all types selling and dealing everything from boere-wors rolls and military history books to Boer War memorabilia and much more. Badges, buttons, guns, knives, medals, silver, tanks, coins and even the oldest metal detector I have ever seen was available for sale. The old detector pictured right was probably world war 2 era. A great display piece for lukas’ Boer War Relics Museum!
People tuned out in good numbers and brought along the youngsters who had a ball climbing on tanks and running riot. There were even those who came in full military uniform and brought with their MG 42’s (which we hoped were not loaded). Truly a military history buffs dream.
I picked up a nice Boer War arms and ammunition book, and Tonie got himself some great silver items. We both chowed down on a vast quantity of pancakes before visiting the monument while we were their.Military History Fair
All in all it was a top day out and we can fully recommend that all enthusiasts come out in force next year! We will post details of the next event on Twitter, Facebook and Google + so nobody can say they did not know about it!
At only R20 it is really worth the entrance fee and a drive to the monument!
See you there next year!
In the mean time be sure to visit the war museum at the Johannesburg Zoo (opposite Zoo lake) It also has some top items on display and a nice shop to spend your hard earned Madibas.
