How to Swing you metal detector.
“Swinging” your metal detector is the movement you make with your detector while walking and searching for metal.
It is very simple to do but there are a few small tips that will help you master this art.
Start by holding your metal detector with the coil about one to three centimeters above the ground and stretched out in front of you. The closer your metal detector is to the surface the deeper it can penetrate.
“Swing” your metal detector. Move the search coil from left to right in a steady and methodical manner and in a straight line that is parallel to yourself while making sure that the coil is always a consistent distance from the surface (one to three cm).
Begin moving forwards at a pace of around a half to one foot per second. This should allow you to overlap each sweep of your coil about 50 percent of the previous sweep. This ensures that no potential treasure is missed. Try not to raise the coil at the end of each sweep like a pendulum. Keep the coil a constant distance from the surface.
When you become more experienced at swinging your metal detector you can begin rotating your upper body and covering a wider arc with each swing.
It is very important not to rush yourself to cover a huge area. Try and picture the treasure you are hunting for is under your coil now, not waiting across the veld.
Now go out there and practice swinging your metal detector as much as you can. Your own garden is the perfect place to start.
