Metal Detecting in Singapore

Metal Detector SA went on an adventure to Singapore and Australia and of course the detectors came along for the ride.

First of all I decided to take my backup metal detector the Garrett Ace 250 because it is super lightweight – about 2.5 kg and small enough to travel with easily. Also along for the ride was the Garrett Pro Pointer without which I would have returned with 50% less finds.

Singapore is one of the richest cities in the world with tourist flocking and cramming into its amazing beach on Sentosa Island every year. Which means plenty of treasures lay in wait for us. Another lucky break is that no Singaporean knows what a metal detector is or is interested in it, the only people that detect these beaches are the few dedicated western tourists who come to Singapore to take advantage of this. We were doing the same.

Another big bonus is that the beaches are kept so clean and free of litter that almost no trash will be found to spoil the party. And a party it was.

Every step we took we found a coin, every 10 steps we found a ring or earring. It was absolute absurd metal detecting madness. We could spend hours in just one small patch on the beach!

We found over 50 Dollars about R350 in about 6 hours or so for the 2 days were at the beach and plenty of jewelry to boot! The spare change paid for all our cab rides around the city and snacks to go with it 😉

I’ll bet if you spent 4 full days combing the beach at Sentosa Island you would come up with 500 dollars easily! A good R3000.

Advice for detecting in Singapore.

If you are interested in Metal Detecting in Singapore take note, you may be stared at by locals totally confused by what you are doing. I definitely recommend going out in your beach kit like boardshorts and sunglasses and look as beachy as possible. The lifegaurds etc should leave you alone if you look like you have just brought a toy to the beach while you swim.

I also hear that you could get into trouble if you find an item that someone lays claim to. If someone says the ring or something else belongs to them and you did not make an effort to find the owner and cannot prove you made the effort then you could find yourself in trouble. Be sure not to pick up anything someone has recently lost or you think has an owner somewhere close and be aware of this if you are going to metal detect in Singapore.

NB – Do not even think about detecting anywhere other than the beach – You will probably be locked up and fined in 10 seconds flat. All land in Singapore is owned by someone and nobody will grant permission.
