November 2013 |
||
An incredible place to go Metal Detecting. The Island of Mauritius is stunning and full of treasure. A 3 hour night hunt on the beach produced some coins and a nice ring.
April 2013 |
||
Great Time Hunting with club members Tonie C and Hennie P. Myself and Tonie rocked some watering holes with the Minelab Xcalibur 2 and came up with many coins and a nice ring. Also a fantastic four wheeler licence 1949 came up on a night hunt located and dug by Tonie with the help of my torch ;). Found an old button under the floorboards of an old house – using just the pro pointer. 2 Old coins – 1960 half penny and 1936 penny.
Recent Finds 2012 |
||
Some beach finds from 2012 |
||
Had some good luck hunting the tidal pools in KZN. Finds made with GTI 2500. A few foreign coins and a nice ticky in the bunch.
Singapore 2012 |
||
Some of my recent finds from a trip to Singapore. Metal Detecting heaven. Every step is a coin and every 5 steps a ring. Madness. Finds made with Ace 250. Super light to travel with. Read more.
Queensland and Whitsundays 2012 |
||
Another trip in 2012 yielded some magic results on the beaches on Queensland Australia and the Whitsunday islands. luckily the smaller 2 dollars are lost more easily than the 1 dollars. Paid for a good portion of the holiday food bill. The gold nugget pictured was found at the beach and was probably lost of a necklace from someone who found an outback nugget and joined the “one ounce club”. Finds made with Ace. Read more.
2011 Coins |
||
A snap of some 2011 coin finds. 80% found with Ace 250 and 20% with Garrett GTI 2500.
Jewelry Finds 2011 |
||
Here is a nice gold earing found in a field in Germiston which has recently been built over. Gold is what every metal detectorist dreams about finding. A nice Silver Ring find from Zoo Lake Gauteng. Beautiful Silver Ring from Maria Shires Waterfall Mpumalanga. Insane cuff links found at the “Windmill park” Springs Gauteng. Nice English military button “made in Birmingham” – not sure what it was doing at Zoo Lake.
Royal Visit Commemorative Medal (1947) |
||
One of my favorite finds ever! A friend has actually found 2 of these so fairly common, but a top find none the less. This was a medal to commemorate the Royal Family visiting South Africa in 1947.
Return to Victoria Lake (Germiston) |
||
My mother and grandmother always told me about how they used to swim at Victoria lake in Germiston. The history was still there to be found. Great coins but eaten to hell.
Zoo Lake coin finds 17/04/2011 |
||
Some great coin finds from Zoo lake Johannesburg. Zoo lake has been used as a park, exhibition and concert venue since the 1900. Prior to 1900 Zoo Lake was a plantation supplying wood to the mining industry and a hunting spot. over 100 years of finds just waiting to be unearthed. The best finds below include 1951 1/4 Penny / 1955 1/4 penny / 1945 1/2 penny / 1953 1 penny. Got to love Coin Shooting! Also a nice South Africs V Australia Pin, probably for Rugby or cricket – 1950 date on the back.
Zoo Lake coin finds 20/04/2011 |
||
Some more great coin finds at Zoo lake Johannesburg. Some great old Pennies! Super 1917 half penny was found as well as a nice silver ring (see below). All the finds at Zoo lake so far have been found in close proximity in what I term the “Goldilocks Zone“. However we will be on the hunt soon for a new hot spot. Also we have noticed from word of mouth and evidence of older holes that Zoo Lake has seen metal detectors before. If you know of who they may be please give us a shout! (the person responsible for the old holes at Zoo Lake has since been identified and Tonie is now a great friend and hunting partner).
Zoo Lake coin finds 26/04/2011 |
||
OK some creepy stuff. Was metal detecting up and down the “Goldilocks Zone” at zoolake when I came across something I now call a “Glory hole“. Once in a lifetime stuff. I picked up a faint signal and started digging. I got way way down about 25cm when I finaly located a nice penny. Covered it all up and had one last scan. dam! more coins in the hole! I uncovered everything again and kept digging. all in all I pulled 9 coins out of 1 hole that grew to 40 cm deep and 40 cm wide. some of the coins were together in 3’s. very weird. all in all it was a 20 coin day at the lake. nice! |
||
Zoo Lake coins and keys: “in god we trust”. |
||
Top finds from Zoo lake once again. Great shilling, tickey etc. Most interesting was the 1977 US one cent. Even more spooky were the 4 keys found pretty far away. also made in the USA. A long way from home they are. Great hunt. Great day in the sun. Watch the video of the US coin being unearthed here: Metal Detecting Videos.
Maria Shires Waterfall finds 2011 |
||
What a location to metal detect! Maria Shires waterfall Mpumalanga. Looking for gold nuggets but found a couple of coins and a beauty of a silver ring! The real treasure is the experience. We can wait to go back and get stuck in to find The Kruger Millions. lol.
The Great War Memorial Hunt in Springs |
||
A great collection of coins were unearthed including a stunning Shilling. Also a pair of cuff links came out of 1 hole next to a world war 2 tank at an old park in Springs. A great location to hunt among great history. On a sad note the World war memorial has been vandalized and the names on the memorial wall including my grandfathers had been stolen for scrap metal. A sad time to live in SA.
First day out with Pro-Pointer hunt 2011 |
||
Tested the Garret Pro pointer on this hunt. Man have i been missing out big time! But an equipment failure cut it short. Need a new bread-knife! Found a wicked button!
First go with Garrett GTI 2500 |
||
First time out with GTI 2500 – tested in all metal mode. Pinpointing was incredibly accurate. Discrimination and accuracy was much better than the Ace 250. But dam this beast is heavy! Found 6 coins in 2 hours, and my first fiver. 2 dog tags also came up “Joseph” and “Tsavo”.
Bicycle Licence Find |
||
Here is a remarkable metal detector find from a park in Springs Gauteng. A bicycle licence disc! One of my favorite finds ever. In the past people had to get licences for there bicycles and attach them. This wonderful specimen is dated 1934. It has probably been under the earth for about 70 years. more bicycle licence finds here.
Cave Hunt |
||
On a trip to the low-veld we went cave exploring (in the ones not marked on any maps and not signposted . Below is also an Martini Henry shell that came up near the cave entrance, probably Boer war era. Cave may have been used during the war.
The Beginning |
||
When i first started out as a student a bough a cheap and nasty Vellerman c200. It performed well enough for me to become hooked and upgrade within 6 months. perception of value changes after you get hooked. My fist ever coin find – a 1943 Shilling found at Victoria Lake (Germiston lake). A ticky and half Penny (British modern) found at Ramsgate Beach in KZN. Pity we were only colonized so late. We have no roman hoards to find ;( also the ever present modern bullets that would be found in almost every park and field in SA.

@ Rich
Great finds!! If I may ask, from interest POV… how or average depth did you find the older items at Zoo Lake. I have no idea of our S.A. ground. I always figured it’s pretty hard on average and doesn’t “churn” but stay static for years. Maybe it’s because most of my finds are very shallow and not old…. but then again I have been using a Garrett 250 which is basic entry level I guess.
Rich says
Hi Stan.
Thanks for the comments!
Found plenty at Zoolake with both the Ace and GTI 2500. Coins anywhere from 2cm – 40 cm down. Depending on ground conditions and luck. Different areas will “churn” very differently depending on slope etc. for example one area of Zoolake has constantly wet ground on a slope with massive churn and deep coins. other areas are rock hard and coins will sink slower. Every area is unique and every area has its hot spots. U can find plenty old coins with the Ace! finding the right locations and putting in the effort is what it all comes down to. Good luck on your hunts and send us some pics!
Rich.

Wow. I had no idea that S.A. and especially Gauteng areas could deliver some really cool stuff like these. All I’ve found’s been clad coins. a hell of a lot of them 😀 but I’m not trying to pay off my MD, I’m in it for the thrill of the find.
Happy hunting.

Hi Hennie
Don’t know if you still hunting? I’m waiting for my Fisher then I’m good to go. Have a Garret 250 at moment but wanted to upgrade. I work in Rustenburg and have a few really good places in mind as well.
Let know with a reply if you’re still detecting. Yep, its just dangerous out there plus more two detectors find more than one 🙂
Marc says
Hi Richard, great finds!
The shotgun cartridge you found is in fact an old rolled brass Martini Henry case. Manufacture of rolled or coiled brass cases stopped in the late 1880’s, thereafter technology had advanced enough to produce drawn brass cases. Your find may well have been fired in anger during the 2nd Boer War or perhaps fired by a hunter, who knows!
Best of luck on future hunts!
Regards
Marc
