Metal Detecting in Mauritius

Metal Detecting in Mauritius.

What a place to go metal detecting! Mauritius has some of the cleanest most beautiful beaches in the world.

Mauritius

Metal detecting here is an absolute pleasure as the scenery is incredible and the bounty plentiful. If you own a metal detector in Mauritius then you will be in for a treat as competition is low and finds abound.

Two Metal Detector SA Club members were lucky enough to do some holiday detecting in Mauritius in 2013 with some great finds. Both were made in the South West of Mauritius around Flic n Flac.

The main public beaches will have a lot more trash, however the resort beaches are clean on the surface but you will still get the dreaded buried cans from people too lazy to reach a dustbin. For the most part however you are lightly to find plenty of jewelry and Mauritian Rupees. You will even pick up a South African Rand or 2.

Here are a few photos of Tobies Mauritian Metal Detecting Finds. A great haul of Mauritian coins, toys and jewelry.

Some finds made by Richard at Sugar Beach Resort Mauritius: A good few coins, a nice ring and some odds and ends as well as the inevitable R2 coin. About 3 hours worth of detecting the beach at night.

There are also plenty of shipwrecks around Mauritius from the old Dutch East India ships and others. You never know what treasure will wash up on a Mauritius beach.

Next time you are on holiday be sure to take your detector along for the ride, it may just pay for your holiday and help you catch a top class tan while hitting the beach.

Metal Detecting in Queensland Australia

Metal Detecting Queensland Australia

Metal Detecting Queensland Australia

After an amazing time metal detecting and stomping around Singapore it was time to do the same in Koala land!

We were staying on the gold coast South of Brisbane a massively popular holiday destination. Like Singapore the beaches are very clean or though not as clean as Singapore – you will still pull out a few bottle caps. The big difference is the size of the beaches. Where Singapore was a small area where everyone concentrates Australia has massively vast unending beaches on the gold coast which means everything is spread out over a huge area. Although Hot spots are to be found around the main beaches.

Some finds from the Gold Coast:

Metal Detecting finds Gold Coast Australia

The main problem with the Australian beaches is that they have a giant machine that drives along the beach digging up all the litter (and treasures) as it goes about 5 inches deep. This means that on Australia’s main beaches you will have much more luck around the dunes and in the waves – nothing was found in between. I found plenty with the Ace 250 where the dunes end and the beach begins and in all the entries and exits or where people sit on the dunes.  Also remember these beaches have been detected to death already by the locals.

HOWEVER!!!!

We moved along to the Whitsunday islands in North East Queensland – The main holiday spots for the great barrier reef. We stayed at a resort on an Island called Long island and it was Singapore all over again. Small super clean beaches with masses of people concentrated in one spot with a bar and restaurant right on the beach aiding people in cash loss.

Detecting for about 3 hours each day I found over $250 (R2000) in coins and tons of jewellery. I even managed $85 in one day!

Finds from Whitsunday Islands:

The best part of detecting here was doing it in the company of Wild Wallabies that you can almost walk up to – see top right.

I stayed out the wet for this trip as you risk life and limb against the sharks and jellyfish. You even have to wear a full wetsuit to prevent stings. (Someone was airlifted to hospital in December). None the less it was paradise for detecting.

These holiday beaches on any island away from local detectorists, with super clean small beaches with plenty of tourists to fill them up are the holy grail of beachcombing.

There was even a shipwreck on the island with a British ship being marooned – after the survivors were rescued by the royal navy they played target practice firing cannon balls at the makeshift shelters the survivors built. But no cannon ball was uncovered. Also a local aboriginal legend says long island had a Spanish wreck and you can find gold coins in the sand at low tide.

We found plenty of Yellow Dollars but no Spanish gold.

Striking Gold!

I did however find a nice gold nugget – Probably an outback nugget a detectorist found and converted into a necklace when he joined the “1 ounce club” and then proceeded to loose again on holiday. Was offered cash for it in Aus but thought I’d hang on to it for a while. Who says the Ace 250 can’t find gold 😉 hahaha.

Travel advice.

Some advice when travelling to Australia with a detector – I had no problem on the international Flights with the detector in Check in luggage. I decided then to take it on board hand luggage for the flight from Brisbane to Prosperpine (a hickville town in North East Australia). The security at Brisbane looked at it and wished my luck on the beaches. However on the return from Prosperpine airport which is about the size of a 2 car garage, the locals were freaked out by this unknown device and made me check it in at a cost of $80. At least my good old Ace it paid for itself.

If I travel again with my detector I would only take it in Check in luggage not carry on. Safe yourself the 3rd degree interrogation and bomb scanning 😉

All in all I am much wiser about traveling with a detector and I will take mine with no matter where the holiday destination may be.

Metal Detecting in Singapore

Metal Detecting in Singapore

Metal Detector SA went on an adventure to Singapore and Australia and of course the detectors came along for the ride.Metal detecting Sentosa Island Singapore

Enjoy the read about metal detecting in Singapore:

First of all I decided to take my backup metal detector the Garrett Ace 250 because it is super lightweight – about 2.5 kg and small enough to travel with easily. Also along for the ride was the Garrett Pro Pointer without which I would have returned with 50% less finds.

Singapore is one of the richest cities in the world with tourist flocking and cramming into its amazing beach on Sentosa Island every year. Which means plenty of treasures lay in wait for us. Another lucky break is that no Singaporean knows what a metal detector is or is interested in it, the only people that detect these beaches are the few dedicated western tourists who come to Singapore to take advantage of this. We were doing the same.

Another big bonus is that the beaches are kept so clean and free of litter that almost no trash will be found to spoil the party. And a party it was.

Every step we took we found a coin, every 10 steps we found a ring or earring. It was absolute absurd metal detecting madness. We could spend hours in just one small patch on the beach!

We found over 50 Dollars about R350 in about 6 hours or so for the 2 days were at the beach and plenty of jewelry to boot! The spare change paid for all our cab rides around the city and snacks to go with it 😉

Day 2:

Latest Metal Detecting Finds

I’ll bet if you spent 4 full days combing the beach at Sentosa Island you would come up with 500 dollars easily! A good R3000.

Advice for detecting in Singapore.

If you are interested in Metal Detecting in Singapore take note, you may be stared at by locals totally confused by what you are doing. I definitely recommend going out in your beach kit like boardshorts and sunglasses and look as beachy as possible. The lifegaurds etc should leave you alone if you look like you have just brought a toy to the beach while you swim.

I also hear that you could get into trouble if you find an item that someone lays claim to. If someone says the ring or something else belongs to them and you did not make an effort to find the owner and cannot prove you made the effort then you could find yourself in trouble. Be sure not to pick up anything someone has recently lost or you think has an owner somewhere close and be aware of this if you are going to metal detect in Singapore.

NB – Do not even think about detecting anywhere other than the beach – You will probably be locked up and fined in 10 seconds flat. All land in Singapore is owned by someone and nobody will grant permission.

Have fun at the beach and don’t be a nuisance 😉 Riches lay in wait.

Most Valuable Metal Detecting Finds

September 12, 2011 by Rich 3 Comments

Has anyone found anything valuable with a Metal Detector?

What a question. In the day and age of the internet that anyone is still asking this question is pretty funny as more and more news floods in about amazing finds being made.Valuable metal detecting finds

We have put together a short list of some of the more valuable metal detecting finds of recent times.

If you are not convinced after this then you never will be.

And if 3 year olds are finding relics valued at 2.5 million Pounds then we should all get out there and try our luck.

Your chances are better than winning the lottery.

This list focuses on valuable relics and coins – but hugely valuable Gold Nuggets are also found.

Read about the largest gold nuggets ever found here (one of these was in 2013!)

Example 1 – 52,000 Roman Coin Hoard Worth $1m

A metal Detector enthusiast named Dave Crisp from Wiltshire in the UK was busy detecting on a farm when he found 21 roman coins. When he dug deeper he found a staggering treasure. A pot weighing 160kg’s containing 52500 Roman coins. Experts say the find is worth around $1 million. This one of the largest metal detector finds in the UK. The hoard is now at British museum in London.   The find is now called the Frome Hoard.

Example 2 – 3 year old James Hyatt finds gold locket potentially worth £2.5 million

If you have luck like this kid then you are blessed. 3 year old James Hyatt found a gold locket worth around £2.5 million virtually on his first time out with his dad.
The gold pendant is said to be from the 16th century with the image of the virgin Mary. The pendant was declared a treasure by the British Museum.
Experts think the exceptional locket, or reliquary, was used to hold alleged parts of Christ’s thorn crown or crucifix.

Example 3 – Amateur With Metal Detector Finds Gold Hoard

55 year old Terry Herbert made a metal detecting discovery that changed the world view of Anglo-Saxon peoples. Officially declared a treasure the Staffordshire Hoard contains 650 gold objects and over 530 silver ones including some inlayed with precious stones. One of the greatest treasures ever discovered and worth a 7 figure sum. One of the most valuable metal detecting finds ever!

We hope you enjoyed this sample of valuable metal detecting finds.
